Tenderpixel Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of new work by Italian artist Nicko Straniero. Designed especially for the gallery space, this show is so intense that it has been split into two exhibitions: Phototoxins and Protoplastic Accumulation.
Phototoxins remains part of an ongoing series in which Straniero questions the connection between photography, image creation and visual diary practice. Offering the viewer fragmented and distorted information imagery, Straniero’s visual realisation demonstrates that the link between subject and composition is never casual, nor is it ever complete.
In this particular series the artist has sought to disrupt fundamental principles of photography, for Straniero doesn’t just take pictures, he fries them…literally! It is this unique technique of frying images in conjunction with adding trace elements of tape, thread and pin holes, that has the artist endlessly seeking the perfect combination of chance and control in his work. He successfully transforms traditional photographic narrative into a more colourful and dystopian reconstruction. Straniero cleverly presents a carefully selected and beautifully manipulated body of images at Tenderpixel and viewers are invited to reassemble them into a story of their own making.
In addition to photography Nicko Straniero is also a painter. Protoplastic Accumulation will be an installation that he will create for Tenderpixel Gallery using the white walls, and potentially the gallery’s gold ceiling, as blank canvas. Straniero employs recycled objects as stamps and embossing tools. This gradual accumulation of traces, shapes and colors produced by the artist will bring into existence a simultaneously organic and geometrical surface that one’s eyes cannot help but become drawn into. The installation work of Nicko Straniero further develops such concepts as creating new visual languages and codes, as well as ‘the fear of the empty space’ (Horror Vacui). The work at Tenderpixel gallery will have a visual musicality to it, pregnant with a multitude design and ornamental motifs, not to mention dynamic movement.
Nicko Straniero is an artist living and working in London since the year 2000. He has exhibited in the United Kingdom (2002-2008), Europe (2000, 2003, 2005) and Japan (2006) and Tenderpixel Gallery is pleased to present his first UK solo exhibition of work.
